Ravenna

Ravenna was so much better than I expected. I mean, I thought it would be pretty good, but I also thought we’d seen a lot of Byzantine stuff and mosaics are fine, but still just mosaics. And I thought this for a couple of quite nice baptistries, and then we went into the church with the famous Justinian and Theodora mosaics and later frescoes and alabaster windows and really Roman architecture, and it absolutely deserves its UNESCO World Heritage status. And the mausoleum of Galla Placidia (in which she was not buried) was also stunning. Great start to Italy.
