Venice Day 2: St Mark’s Basilica

I have no good pictures of the square or the outside of the basilica; and unfortunately basilica rules include no photographs. However, I took some from the roof of the basilica (allowed) and just a couple from inside anyway. Amazing mosaics! Looks like some conservation work may have gone wrong at some point. The whole building feels like a weird mix of Byzantine and Renaissance.

The horses on the outside are replicas. They’re very pretty, but the originals on the inside are fantastic: a full set of four antique bronzes, date uncertain, possibly Hellenistic, possibly Roman, absolutely gorgeous. No one was looking so I was a bad visitor and broke the no camera rule.
